She could have handled her wedding announcement pretty much any way she wished. She could have published a single image on Twitter/X, pushed a cryptic Instagram story, or even nothing at all, letting fans piece it together from paparazzi photographs (if you have even a passing understanding of Swifties, it’s not even a question they would decipher it).

Instead, on July 3, a marquee outside Madison Square Garden lit up with 4 words: “JUST&T MARRIED!” There was no caption and no account tagged. Just a sign, on a building, in a city, that 1,000s of people could physically walk past and photograph with their devices. Within minutes, it was everywhere online.

Scarcity as strategy

Everything about modern marketing content is built to ‘remove friction.’ Post something, and it reaches, as the saying goes, everyone, everywhere, all at once. Swift did the opposite, she put her announcement in precisely 1 place, at 1 moment, visible to whoever happened to be standing on 7th Avenue at that time.

Perhaps counterintuitively to some, constraint is what makes this specific approach of value. A tweet or Instagram post is disposable, one of 1,000s scrolling past in a feed, all with equal visual weight. A lit-up sign on the side of Madison Square Garden is something not scrollable, you either saw it happen, or you saw someone else’s photo of it happening. Either way, you were reacting to something that existed in a physical space 1st and digital space 2nd.

Marketers spend enormous budgets trying to manufacture that feeling artificially, usually by calling something a “moment” in a press release or corporate blog post. Swift’s team didn’t need the label or any of our fancy industry jargon. They just built an actual moment in time and let the internet do what comes naturally: document it, argue about it, refuse to stop talking about it and meme’ing it for a week. Some marketers might shrug at this type of idea, ‘too simple, wouldn’t work.’ Others see the brilliance.

Out of home is different, and special

There’s a very good reason out of home has quietly outperformed digital formats on cultural (and performance) impact per $ spent. You can’t close a billboard, there’s no way to scroll past a building. An ad in a feed competes with infinite content (and other ads) in the same feed, tuned out by users who’ve been conditioned over the last decade to ignore every trick in a digital marketer’s toolbox. Growth hackers have run every well dry. But a sign on a skyscraper, that competes with nothing. It’s just there, and so are you. If you’re not actually looking around, you might walk into a cab, so there is no alternative but to pay attention.

Swift understands this better than most brand managers do. She’s used surprise drops, physical clues, and unexpected locations for years to generate coverage that dwarfs most paid media budgets. The MSG marquee is the same playbook just applied to her personal life. The lesson isn’t “buy a billboard.” It’s that a message placed in the physical world, at the right time and location, carries a type of proof and permanence that an internet post in a feed alone can’t replicate. It’s grandiose, romantic, even timeless. It’s the same reason Hollywood uses billboards and not display ads in movies.

What marketers can learn from Swift

The instinct from most marketing teams is to add more channels, more targeting, more impressions, purely for the sake of doing more. Swift’s wedding announcement went the other direction: 1 location, 1 message, 0 explanation. And for this, it became one of the most talked-about moments of the year.

Yes, she’s a celebrity and one of the most followed. But large brands are famous, too. And attention isn’t only earned by merely being everywhere (although certainly saturation can work, too). It’s also earned by being somewhere specific enough that people feel like they’re ‘witnessing something’ rather than just being marketed to. A billboard outside a building people can point their phones at will always beat a perfectly targeted digital ad served solipsistically to 1 person they’ll never remember seeing.

Even smaller brands don’t need Taylor Swift’s fame to borrow this logic. They need the discipline to pick a physical place and moment, make it real, and as one of our favorite marketers Seth Godin says “remarkable” enough the crowd who sees it, they do the broadcasting for you.

The instinct from most marketing teams is to add more channels, more targeting, more impressions, purely for the sake of
