Meanwhile, the most reliable answer to consumer trust has been standing at a sampling table the whole time, holding a bottle nobody’s buying.

The food, beverage, and beauty brands seeing the strongest gains in retailer trust and consumer loyalty right now share one thing. They’re out-educating everyone else. And that shift is showing up in a place most marketing budgets still treat as an afterthought: the field team.

The Rebalancing Already Underway

Marketing budgets should be moving, and the reason is attention scarcity, not sentiment. Paid media buys impressions. A well-trained field rep builds a relationship.

Enough brands have gotten burned pouring spend into media with diminishing returns that they’re now asking a sharper question: What’s a single human conversation worth against another thousand impressions? Increasingly, the answer favors the conversation, especially when you’re measuring for durable ROI instead of a short-term bump.

But that reallocation only pays off if the person having the conversation is actually worth talking to.

The Difference Between Reciting and Educating

A rep who recites facts is reading from a script. A rep who educates is drawing on lived experience to answer the question the customer didn’t know to ask. You can’t fake that distinction, and consumers aren’t fooled by the attempt. A shopper can tell within 30 seconds whether they’re talking to someone who memorized a spec sheet or someone who actually knows the category.

The gap closes with who you hire and how you develop them. Brands that get this right are recruiting people with real category fluency already built in — former bartenders and bar managers for spirits, former estheticians and makeup artists for beauty — then running them through an immersive brand education program before they ever hit the field. And critically, they treat that knowledge as something a rep keeps building, rather than something that gets checked off during onboarding and never revisited.

None of that development matters, however, if it doesn’t meet the moment. And the moment has changed.

Consumers Already Did Their Homework

Today’s consumer usually shows up already having researched the category. A 2026 survey found that nearly three-quarters of shoppers say digital research shapes what they plan to buy before they walk in, but only 13% stick rigidly to that plan once they’re actually in the store. Research narrows the field. It rarely closes the sale on its own.

Consumers also arrive more ingredient-conscious, more values-driven, and more skeptical of a traditional pitch than any cohort before them. They don’t want to be sold to. They want their questions answered by someone who can go deeper than the label.

Education-led field marketing treats that moment differently. Instead of running a script, it turns the interaction into an actual conversation, one where the rep can talk provenance, usage occasions, and category trends, and come out the other side having genuinely informed the person in front of them. It’s a different kind of value exchange, and consumers can tell the difference.

What Buyers Actually Remember

The consumer isn’t the only one who can tell the difference. So can the person deciding whether the product gets shelf space in the first place.

Today’s buyers have watched a hundred reps walk through the door with the same sales sheet. What they remember is the rep who could speak to the category with real fluency, who understood their business, their day-to-day challenges, and what was actually moving off their shelves, not just the SKUs they were there to sell.

That’s the rep who earns trust in a shelf-placement conversation. When a rep empathizes with what a buyer is dealing with and shows up with something that helps beyond their own product line, that’s the conversation that turns into a standing relationship instead of a one-time placement.

The Opportunity Hiding in Plain Sight

None of this requires a new platform or a bigger campaign. It requires marketers to look at the people already standing in front of their customers every day and ask whether those people are equipped to educate, not just execute.

The downside is worth naming directly. An underprepared rep can actively hurt more than they help. Every unconvincing interaction is a missed opportunity to turn a skeptical retailer or consumer into an advocate. Worse, it confirms the exact skepticism the brand needed to overcome in the first place. That’s reverse progress, and most brands aren’t tracking it as a cost because it doesn’t show up on a media report.

You don’t need a new sampling table. You need to train who’s standing at the one you’ve already got.

Kim Lawton, co-founder of Enthuse — a New York City-based marketing agency that teaches the world to love your brand — advocates for B2B marketers to shift from traditional sales and marketing tactics to an education-led marketing approach.
