The games were on your regional sports network, so you’d call your rep, place your order, and your client would show up in-game.

That system is disappearing.

Regional sports networks are collapsing, and games are moving to streaming platforms, league-owned services, and a growing number of new distributors. It seems like every few months another company announces a new way to package and deliver local sports.

Now, the market is harder to navigate than ever. That’s why the FCC opened the door to revisiting rules around sports broadcasting, citing rising costs, subscription fatigue, and a fragmented viewing landscape. The FCC’s move points to a deeper shift that has fundamentally changed how live sports is bought and sold: fans are struggling to find games, and advertisers are struggling to engage audiences at scale.

The access points that buyers had in the past are evaporating, and the new ones are not sufficient for their needs. Inventory is now scattered across platforms and vendors, each packaging and defining it differently. For local buyers, this shift has created a new reality where there’s more opportunity on paper, but far less clarity on how to access and execute it.

So what are advertisers actually getting when they buy “live sports”? Why did buying become so complex in the first place? And how is this affecting local advertisers?

Why access does not equal visibility

At the center of this system is a lack of clarity: buyers don’t really know what they’re getting.

Buyers want to know if their ad ran in the live game or next to a recap clip. They want to know what they are paying for up front, not after the reporting is reconciled. But “live sports” is easy to promise and hard to define. Inventory appears in different formats, under different labels, with varying levels of transparency. In-game placements, universally seen as the most valuable, are not always explicitly guaranteed.

Because of this lack of clarity, campaigns regularly launch without a clear, unified view of where ads will run, when they will appear, or how performance will be measured over time. Buyers have to accept broad labels like “live sports” without a shared definition or consistent delivery. And this isn’t going anywhere, largely because it’s a direct result of how inventory is packaged and sold across a fragmented system.

Why more inventory has created more work

The collapse of the regional sports network model has created a vacuum. Streaming has unlocked new supply. Leagues are distributing content more broadly. New partners are entering the ecosystem. From a distance, this looks like an expansion of opportunity.

But it also means buyers have to find the inventory and make it all work together.

A campaign that once moved through a handful of familiar relationships now has to account for different platforms, buying processes, specs, reporting windows, and levels of market-by-market control. Each new access point adds another operational question: Who controls the inventory? How is it measured? Can it be targeted locally? Can it run in-game? How will it be measured?

This is the central paradox of modern sports advertising: there is more inventory, but no simple way to organize it into a campaign that runs cleanly across markets.

How the system is rigged against regional buyers

Local buyers typically have three options for live sports:

Use a generic DSP, which can’t guarantee live in-game placements and often routes spend into remnant inventory, highlight clips, and adjacent content.

Buy directly from rights holders, which usually requires large commitments and bundled inventory packages that can limit buying flexibility.

Work through cable and distribution intermediaries that bundle sports with non-sports inventory to create the scale local buyers need.

In every case, the buyers lack shared frameworks, consistent standards, and coordination.

The complexity of sports streaming has become a barrier to entry for many local advertisers. Premium inventory exists, but local buyers often lack a clear, reliable way to access and execute against it. Consequently, a meaningful portion of demand never materializes.

What should be a scalable opportunity becomes an operational burden. And with major moments ahead, from the playoffs to the World Cup, the gap will be more visible. Local buyers have more chances than ever to show up in live sports, but the current system doesn’t facilitate campaign execution.

The next era of sports buying

There’s more live sports inventory than ever, but buyers still have to work hard to understand what they’re getting, where it will run, and whether it will actually show up in game. That’s an execution problem.

This means that as regulators, leagues, and media companies reshape how live sports is distributed, the advertising side needs to catch up. Buyers need simpler access points, clearer definitions of inventory, and systems that allow campaigns to run as unified strategies instead of a series of disconnected buys.

The demand is already there, and live sports will continue to deliver what audiences and advertisers want most. But until the systems behind it become more consistent, much of that value will remain difficult to capture.

The access points that buyers had in
