Collect more customer information. Add more signals. Build a more complete profile. Give the model as much as possible, and let it find the answer.

AI makes that prospect especially tempting. It can analyze information faster, identify patterns that might be difficult for people to spot, and turn questions that once required days of work into answers delivered in the time it takes to get a cup of coffee. But more data can also mean more noise, more outdated information, and more opportunities to reach the wrong conclusion faster.

I recently spoke with Gladys Kong, CEO of Azira, about what marketers actually need from their data as AI becomes a larger part of marketing analysis and decision-making. Our conversation kept returning to a fairly simple idea: the goal is not to collect the most data. It is to use the right data for the decision you need to make.

Consent is the starting point, not a detail to address later

The privacy landscape has become increasingly complicated as individual states establish different rules for collecting and using consumer data. Gladys described some states as “ban states” and others as “consent states,” with different restrictions surrounding precise location data and other consumer information. That means marketers cannot assume that data available in one state can be used in the same way everywhere else. Before considering how much information they have or what an AI model might do with it, they need to know whether the data was collected with consent and whether they have the right to use it for that particular purpose.

That is not simply a compliance question. It is also a data-quality question. If the foundation of the analysis is data the organization should not be using, everything built on top of it becomes a problem.

Data gets old, even when the spreadsheet does not

Marketers also have a habit of treating historical data as though its value increases with volume. If two years of information are useful, five years must be even better. That does not always hold up when consumer behavior is changing quickly.

Gladys used quick-service restaurants as an example. GLP-1 medications are influencing what some consumers eat. Delivery services have changed how people order. Self-service screens allow customers to move through menus differently, and the lines between fast food and fast-casual restaurants have become less distinct. Data collected several years ago may accurately describe what customers did at the time, but that does not mean it reflects how they behave now. Unless the goal is to study a longer historical trend, Gladys recommends placing greater value on recent information that reflects the current market. AI can process enormous amounts of data, but it cannot make outdated behavior current.

Feeding an old view of the customer into a faster model can simply produce an outdated answer more efficiently.

Start with the decision, then choose the data

The right data depends on what the marketer is trying to accomplish. A restaurant deciding where to open its next location needs different information from a brand trying to turn a monthly visitor into a weekly customer. A campaign built to reach new audiences requires a different view from one measuring whether advertising resulted in store visits. First-party data is usually the logical place to begin. It can show a business what customers buy, how frequently they visit, and how they behave within the brand’s own environment. What it cannot show is what those customers do outside the brand’s four walls.

Location data can help marketers understand where people go and how they move through the physical world. Transaction data adds another layer by showing where they spend money. Identity data can help connect those signals into a broader consumer profile.

Together, those sources create what Gladys describes as a triangulation of signals. The goal is not to add every available data source. It is to combine the signals that provide the context needed to answer a specific question.

Location provides the context that other data can miss

Knowing that someone spent time on a particular city block provides limited information. Knowing that the person visited a fast-food restaurant and then went directly to a coffee shop begins to tell a story. As Gladys joked, perhaps the first restaurant’s coffee was not very good.

That example is simple, but the distinction matters. Demographic information may describe who a customer is, and transaction data may show what the customer purchased. Location can help explain the behavior surrounding that purchase.

It can show how people move between competitors, which other brands they visit, how long they spend in a location, and how those patterns change over time. That context gives marketers a better chance of understanding why something happened instead of simply recording that it happened.

Faster analysis should create more questions, not just more reports

Before AI, answering a question such as “Where else do our customers shop?” could require a data analyst to gather several reports, combine the information, conduct the analysis, and return with an answer days later in the best case scenario.

Now, marketers can ask many of those questions in natural language and receive useful analysis much faster. The skill threshold is lower, the process requires less manual work, and the information is less likely to become stale while everyone waits for the next reporting meeting. The real value is not simply speed. It is what marketers can do with the time they get back.

Gladys believes AI allows marketers to be more curious. They can ask follow-up questions, explore unexpected patterns, test different assumptions, and spend more time deciding what the information means. Combined with human knowledge of the customer, the market, and the business, AI can help turn analysis into more timely and predictive action.

For years, marketing teams have spent enormous amounts of time building reports that explain what already happened. AI gives them an opportunity to spend more of that time considering what to do next.

But that only works when the information behind the answer is consented, current, relevant, and selected with a clear purpose. More data is not the competitive advantage. Knowing which data matters—and what to do with it—is.

Feeding an old view of the customer into a faster model can simply produce an
