(Airing in 2021, the year 2020 will remain in the name as the Tokyo Olympics were delayed due to COVID-19.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The last time we checked in with these Olympic mascots, Miraitowa and Someity had just <a href=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/the-names-of-the-tokyo-2020-olympic-mascots-are\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">received their names<\/a>. A lot has happened over the last year, so let\u2019s get everyone up to speed on these Olympic icons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-meet-miraitowa\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Meet Miraitowa<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u6771\u4eac2020\u30aa\u30ea\u30f3\u30d4\u30c3\u30af\u30de\u30b9\u30b3\u30c3\u30c8 \u30df\u30e9\u30a4\u30c8\u30ef\u7af6\u6280\u30a2\u30cb\u30e1\u30fc\u30b7\u30e7\u30f3\" width=\"1240\" height=\"698\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ixE1a6_l7e4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miraitowa is the official <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olympic.org\/tokyo-2020-mascot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games mascot<\/a>. Created by Ryo Taniguchi, the name Miraitowa is derived from two Japanese words. \u201cMirai\u201d which means future and \u201cTowa\u201d meaning eternity. The name is meant to symbolize a future of eternal hope for people around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-18-at-8.13.20-PM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13093\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miraitowa embodies old tradition and new innovation. The character\u2019s forehead bears the emblem of the Tokyo 2020 Games, a traditional chessboard motif composed of blue rectangles in three different sizes. Pronounced \u201csoh-may-tee,\u201dSomeity\u2019s name derives from two words. Someiyoshino, a popular type of cherry blossom, and the phrase \u201cso mighty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-18-at-8.12.22-PM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13094\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing is impossible for Someity! The mascot has a set of cherry blossom tactile sensors on the sides of its head. These sensors allow Someity to fly and move objects without touching them. Someity\u2019s supernatural gifts are matched with the mascot\u2019s ability to remain calm, collected, and converse with elements of nature such as the wind and stones. The mental and physical strength Someity possesses represents the Paralympic athletes that are able to overcome obstacles and make incredible strides towards success at the Paralympic Games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-olympic-and-paralympic-mascots-throughout-history\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Olympic and Paralympic Mascots Throughout History<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Tokyo 2020 website is currently sharing photo carousels of the <a href=\"https:\/\/tokyo2020.org\/en\/news\/photos\/galleries\/olympic-mascots-through-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Olympic<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/tokyo2020.org\/en\/news\/photos\/galleries\/paralympic-mascots-through-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Paralympic<\/a> mascots throughout the decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Olympic mascots date as far back as Schuss at the 1968 Winter Olympics, Grenoble. More beloved favorites, including Sam at the 1984 Summer Olympics, Los Angeles, Wenlock from the 2012 Summer Olympics, London, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advertisingweek360.com\/meet-vinicius-tom-two-mascots-born-excitement-rio-2016-olympics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vicinius from the 2016 Summer Olympics, Rio de Janerio<\/a> are all spotted over the years. Next year, we\u2019ll see two new mascots debut at the <a href=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/meet-the-mascots-of-the-beijing-2022-olympic-winter-games\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bing Dwen Dwen is a panda ambassador and the official Beijing 2022 Olympic Games mascot.
