The two teams playing each other? It\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/watch-the-mcnugget-buddies-dress-up-like-ronald-mcdonald-in-clowning-around\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ronald McDonald<\/a> versus the McNugget Buddies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/mcdonalds_hockey_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11252\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe that seems a little unbalanced in terms of players, but this isn\u2019t traditional ice hockey. It\u2019s hokey hockey!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-hokey-hockey\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hokey Hockey<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"McNugget Buddies Ronald McDonald Ice Hockey McDonald&amp;apos;s Commercial\" width=\"1240\" height=\"698\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UIy92AeGACk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silliness and shenanigans abound in Leo Burnett\u2019s \u201cHokey Hockey\u201d commercial! Let\u2019s review the game, play by play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gliding along on skates, Ronald sweeps down the ice with his hockey stick. The McNugget Buddies also sweep down the ice\u2026 literally, using tiny push brooms. Not surprisingly, Ronald makes the first goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, the McNugget Buddies get distracted with a s\u2019mores session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/mcnugget_hockey.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11257\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe competition is heating up, so, of course, the McNuggets toast marshmallows,\u201d says Rich Seidelman, former art director at Leo Burnett.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With less than 15 seconds left in the spot, the puns keep flying at the fans. Ronald covers the ice, winning goal after goal. The McNugget Buddies also \u201ccover\u201d the ice \u2014 in their own way, of course. They help tuck an ice cube into bed. (Side note: there seems to be an awful lot of McNugget-sized equipment on an ice hockey rink that probably shouldn\u2019t be there.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suddenly, Ronald McDonald\u2019s puck goes to the McNuggets. The puck<em> has<\/em> the McNuggets, with all of the Buddies riding it into the net! Chaos ensues when the McNugget Buddies and Ronald McDonald collide into one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/mcdonalds_ronald.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11256\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where will this game end? Judging from Ronald\u2019s missing teeth, it looks like it\u2019s time for everyone\u2019s favorite clown to see a dentist! The McNugget Buddies don\u2019t have teeth, so they\u2019re in the clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-making-hokey-hockey\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Making Hokey Hockey<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/mcdonalds_hockey_storyboard.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11254\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several <a href=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/kevin-carlson-on-being-a-puppeteer-for-the-mcdonalds-mcnuggets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">familiar faces from Leo Burnett<\/a>, and puppeteers, helped bring Hokey Hockey to life. Ron Finley directed the spot and Barbara Fallon wrote the script.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/mcdonalds_hockey_storyboard_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11255\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seidelman directed its artwork, which closely mirrors these storyboards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/mcdonalds_hockey_4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11253\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does the ice rink in Hokey Hockey look real to you? That\u2019s because it\u2019s a real rink! The commercial filmed at a real ice rink in Los Angeles during April 1999. Puppeteers, including Carl Johnson, Tim Blaney, and Tony Urbano (seen here), helped devise green screen poles. This allowed the puppeteers to operate the McNugget from above. Otherwise, the rink would have to be drilled through in order to operate the McNuggets with the puppeteers stuffed underneath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-jersey-nuggets\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Jersey Nuggets<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Watch Hokey Hockey closely. You\u2019ll notice little Easter eggs \u2014 nuggets, really \u2014 that reveal clever nods to the McDonald\u2019s advertising clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/mcdonalds_hockey_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11251\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One scene in particular shows the McNuggets facing away from the camera on their hockey puck. The names \u201cLeick\u201d and \u201cBergold\u201d are sewn into their hockey jerseys. These are the names of actual McDonald\u2019s advertising clients, Susan Leick and Roy Bergold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMcNuggowicz,\u201d however, isn\u2019t a real client.
