You might be surprised to hear quite a few of our favorite characters have met Kris Kringle. Some brand mascots actually <em>saved<\/em> Christmas. Others, well, they may or may not have passed out at their first glimpse of Jolly Saint Nick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a twinkle in our eye, we\u2019ve ranked the five most memorable ad campaigns revealing how advertising\u2019s most iconic characters met Santa Claus.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Richard Taylor: 7 UP Christmas - Commercial\" width=\"1240\" height=\"930\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/g1jJy2iOFY4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-5-7-up-s-cool-spot\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. 7 Up\u2019s Cool Spot<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the late 1980s throughout most of the 1990s, soft drink 7 Up\u2019s brand mascot was a red dot wearing sunglasses. This was Cool Spot, who was often accompanied by several other Cool Spot characters to save the day with the refreshing drink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this 7 Up Christmas commercial <a href=\"http:\/\/richardtaylordesign.com\/director\/commercials-1990s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">directed by Richard Taylor<\/a>, Santa has finished delivering presents and stuffing stockings for the night. He has also finished drinking the glass of 7 Up (hey, nice alternative to milk!) and eating the cookies left behind for him. The crew of Cool Spot characters leap out of the soda can immediately once Santa has gone up the chimney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, a bright red toy truck has fallen out of Santa\u2019s bag. It\u2019s stuck on the roof. That toy is meant to be under the tree as a present! As Santa flies away in his sleigh, it\u2019s up to Cool Spot to save the day. Through a series of festive hijinks, the Cool Spot characters work together and get the truck under the tree.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Aflac - Chimney (2003, USA)\" width=\"1240\" height=\"930\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Phb3rBBdJ_I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-4-aflac-duck\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Aflac Duck<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Have you ever wondered what would happen if Santa Claus got stuck in a particularly narrow chimney? That\u2019s what happens in this 2003 Aflac spot from Kaplan Thaler Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Santa gets trapped in a chimney. He loudly bemoans his lack of workers\u2019 compensation insurance as a confused little girl reacts below. The Aflac Duck waddles on top of the roof, trying to say \u201cAFLAC\u201d loud enough to get Kris Kringle\u2019s attention. The Aflac Duck finally does, but sneezes, presumably from the chimney soot. The icon falls off the roof and lands in a snowman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How long will Santa be stuck in the chimney? Hopefully not for long, but it\u2019s tough to send in a backup when it\u2019s Christmas Eve. Next time, sign up for Aflac \u2014 and when in doubt toss the toys down the chimney.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/b2ZZWa9o_kQ\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/b2ZZWa9o_kQ<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-3-the-pillsbury-doughboy\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. The Pillsbury Doughboy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exhibit A: A jolly fellow who loves to \u201cho ho ho!\u201d laugh out loud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exhibit B: A tiny, enthusiastic character who giggles \u201choo hoo!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What happens when you put the Pillsbury Doughboy and Santa Claus in the same room? There\u2019s a bit of Christmas magic in the air, by way of baked treats and gifts and a spot envisioned by creative agency McCann Erickson. But, it\u2019s mostly chuckles. Poppin\u2019 Fresh gets poked in the tummy by Santa, and pokes him right back. These two definitely have a case of the giggles!<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"M&amp;Ms Christmas Commercial:  THEY DO EXIST!\" width=\"1240\" height=\"930\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iE8CJwXSPRs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-2-m-amp-m-s\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. M&amp;M\u2019S<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Christmas in 1997, the Red and Yellow M&amp;M\u2019S icons brought Santa a bowl full of red and green M&amp;M\u2019S. This is in lieu of cookies and milk, altogether it is interesting in retrospect that Red is okay with, well\u2026 red M&amp;M\u2019S in the bowl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The color of the M&amp;M\u2019S aside, all does not go well. The BBDO spot is titled \u201cFaint\u201d for a good reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the duo is naturally inclined to do, the pair bickers as they head to the tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo, you think Santa will like these red and green M&amp;M\u2019S?\u201d Yellow asks Red.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t know. I never met the guy!\u201d Red irritably replies. Yellow has clearly asked this question many times. If I had to guess, it\u2019s that Red (probably) doesn\u2019t believe in Santa Claus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lo and behold, but who should they see? Jolly Saint Nick!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWA-HO! He does exist!\u201d Red exclaims, completely bug-eyed and shell shocked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey <em>do<\/em> exist,\u201d Santa whispers, in shock that the M&amp;M\u2019S are real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both characters faint. Yellow holds up the bowl, hesitant. \u201cUm, Santa?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"First two Coke Polar Bear Commercials\" width=\"1240\" height=\"930\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/F0D3PusOjkE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-1-coca-cola-polar-bears\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Coca-Cola Polar Bears<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coca-Cola has no shortage of holiday mascots. The soft drink company worked with an illustrator named <a href=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/meet-haddon-sundblom-creator-coca-colas-santa-claus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Haddon Sundblom<\/a> to reshape the appearance of their famous Santa Claus imagery. Sundblom also drew <a href=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/coca-cola-sprite-boy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sprite Boy<\/a>, a short-lived, elfin character with a personality just as sparkling as Coke\u2019s carbonated bubbles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sundblom, however, did not create the Coca-Cola Polar Bears. These iconic furry faces were brought to life by <a href=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/ken-stewart-creator-of-coca-cola-polar-bears-reflects-on-their-25th-anniversary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ken Stewart<\/a>, former Senior Vice President, Creative and Advertising at Columbia Pictures. Coca-Cola\u2019s Polar Bears, inspired by Stewart\u2019s yellow Labrador Morgan, were illustrated and animated alongside digital animation company Rhythm &amp; Hues. The Polar Bears were introduced to the world in 1993, delighting and dazzling audiences worldwide.
