{"id":20075,"date":"2019-03-05T13:36:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-05T18:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/advertisingweek.com\/aw360\/?p=20075"},"modified":"2026-09-18T13:48:39","modified_gmt":"2026-09-18T17:48:39","slug":"colonel-robocop-makes-his-kfc-debut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/advertisingweek.com\/aw360\/news\/colonel-robocop-makes-his-kfc-debut\/20075\/","title":{"rendered":"Colonel RoboCop Makes His KFC Debut"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Heather Taylor<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comedians, Reba McEntire, and a bear-shaped honey bottle called \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/who-is-colonel-bear-kfcs-new-mascot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Colonel Bear\u2019<\/a> have all played the role of Colonel Sanders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/colonel_robocop_secret_recipe.jpg\" alt=\"colonel_robocop_secret_recipe\" class=\"wp-image-10171\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, KFC\u2019s icon is getting the silver screen treatment. Colonel Sanders has transformed into Colonel RoboCop. (Pro tip for all of our younger readers: that\u2019s a reference to the hero in the 1987 action cult classic <em>RoboCop<\/em>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-countdown\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018Countdown\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two new commercials have debuted from ad agency Wieden + Kennedy featuring Colonel RoboCop behaving like, well, a RoboCop. Dressed in a robotic bodysuit with stiff movements, there are hints of the Colonel underneath the costume. He still has his white hair and goatee. His glasses are (somehow) attached outside of his headgear. Oh, and he\u2019s holding buckets of KFC chicken.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/lGPWkbVRNUk\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/lGPWkbVRNUk<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In \u2018Countdown,\u2019 Colonel RoboCop interrupts family movie night with a KFC $20 fill-up. They have 10 seconds to try the bucket out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The family ignores Colonel RoboCop to watch the actual <em>RoboCop<\/em> film on their TV. Colonel RoboCop then raises the stakes from 10 seconds to <em>five seconds<\/em> to comply with his orders. The family instantly leaps to attention and dives for the chicken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-secret-recipe\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018Secret Recipe\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/FU_U11WXaTM\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/FU_U11WXaTM<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This minute-long spot starts off with a fried chicken dinner party. Colonel Sanders \u2014 er, Colonel RoboCop \u2014 sits at the head of the table. When an inquisitive guest asks him for his secret recipe, Colonel RoboCop deadpans that he would have to kill the guest first before telling him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upon hearing this, the guests become (understandably) visibly rattled. Colonel RoboCop then begins laughing, and shifting around in his chair, robotically. This causes the entire table to laugh along with him. We think it\u2019s all still a joke until the very end. This is when Colonel Sanders looks directly, and quite seriously, at the camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Would he actually kill to protect the chicken\u2019s recipe? The commercial\u2019s end tagline kind of answers that question. Kind of. Real loosely. \u201cYou can eat it, but you can\u2019t know it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-ultimate-colonel-robocop-easter-egg\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Ultimate Colonel RoboCop Easter Egg<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/colonel_robocop.jpg\" alt=\"colonel_robocop\" class=\"wp-image-10172\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does Colonel RoboCop sound familiar to anyone else?
