Fandom begins long before kickoff and continues well after the final whistle. It is the group chat deciding where to watch, the food ordered for a watch party and the trips to and from the stadium.

And as digital platforms become increasingly connected to those real-world behaviors, marketers have an opportunity to rethink where, when and how they participate.

We’ve moved through several eras of digital media. Television ushered in a “lean back” phase of passive consumption. Mobile and social brought us “lean in,” where audiences actively created, shared and interacted. Gaming and immersive environments introduced “being in,” allowing people to inhabit digital spaces.

Now, we’re entering what I think of as the “lean through” era: digital experiences increasingly translate intent into action in the physical world. A tap, order, or prompt activates real-world action, turning the screen from a place to consume media into a remote control for what happens next.

For advertisers, that changes the opportunity considerably. It means moving beyond being adjacent to fandom and finding ways to become useful within it. And to do so successfully requires a fundamental rethink of the traditional playbook across timing, audience, and utility.

Expand the goal post: Look beyond prime time

Sports marketers have become exceptionally good at identifying marquee moments. The challenge is that everyone else has identified them too.

During a major sporting event, brands are competing to react to the same play, meme or cultural moment. Real-time marketing remains an important part of the playbook, but speed is only one dimension of relevance.

Sports create predictable rituals and needs before, during and after an event. In many cases, that planning and spending begins months before game day, starting with the purchase of a ticket and decisions around travel and accommodations. As the event gets closer, fans need to figure out how to get there. They make plans with friends. They decide what to eat. They gather at bars and restaurants. They order meals during the game and eventually need to get home. These moments may not generate the same headlines as a viral halftime post, but they give brands a valuable chance to anticipate needs and show up with even greater relevance.

The future isn’t necessarily about reacting faster. It’s about anticipating better.

Redefine the audience through intent

For years, sports audiences have largely been built around demographics, content consumption and inferred interests. Someone watches basketball content, visits a sports website or falls within a certain demographic profile, and we infer that they are a basketball fan.

Those signals can be useful, but they also tell an incomplete story. Real world behavior can reveal a much richer picture of fandom because it shows what people are actively choosing to do, not simply what they watched or clicked.

Consider an NBA fan. A traditional audience profile might emphasize jerseys, sneakers and sports merchandise. But behavioral signals on Uber reveal a broader lifestyle. NBA fans on our platform are three times more likely to be ultra-high spenders, with behaviors that extend into premium transportation, luxury retail, hospitality and other experiences across the city.

That matters because people are multidimensional. A sports fan is rarely only a sports fan. They may also be a gamer, a foodie, a frequent traveler or a luxury shopper. Their interests shift by day, occasion and context. A person ordering wings during a Sunday game might be the same person ordering a healthy lunch on Monday.

When marketers rely too heavily on static audience definitions, that nuance disappears.

Intent provides another layer. Booking a ride to a stadium, heading to a sports bar or ordering food during a game can signal that fandom has moved from passive interest to active participation.

For advertisers, the question shifts from “Who is this person?” to “What do they need in this moment?” — an increasingly powerful distinction.

Shift from sponsorship to enablement

Sports marketing has traditionally excelled at celebrating fandom. Brands tell emotional stories about the thrill of victory, the heartbreak of defeat and the communities that sports create. Those stories matter because fandom is often woven into people’s sense of self, community and belonging.

But there is another side of the experience marketers often overlook: the everyday friction surrounding fandom.

Every game, watch party and sporting event comes with logistics. Fans coordinate schedules, navigate traffic, decide where to meet, figure out what to eat and make their way home.

The passion for sports is timeless, but the logistics surrounding it can be complicated. That presents an opportunity for brands to move beyond simply sponsoring the experience and begin enabling it.

The question becomes less about “How can my brand appear around this event?” and more about “How can my brand make this experience better?” That requires understanding the difference between showing up with something genuinely useful and simply adding another promotional message to an already crowded experience.

That might mean helping someone get to the venue more easily, making dinner one less thing to think about during a game, or providing an offer that is genuinely useful in the context of what they are already doing.

This is where commerce and other action-oriented platforms can play an increasingly important role for advertisers. When media sits closer to moments of decision and action, brands have an opportunity to connect their message to something consumers are actively trying to accomplish.

That shifts the value exchange.

Instead of competing solely for attention, brands can provide utility.

From impressions to participation

None of this means reach, storytelling or sponsorships are disappearing. They remain essential parts of the sports marketing mix. But they are no longer the whole equation.

The definition of ROI is expanding from exposure toward participation and action. Marketers increasingly have an opportunity to understand not only whether someone encountered a message, but what behaviors surround that exposure and where a brand can meaningfully contribute to the experience. That might mean looking beyond reach and impressions to signals such as purchases, visits, engagement or other actions that show how consumers participated after an exposure.

That is why “right-time marketing” matters. It brings together first-party signals, context and real-world behavior to identify predictable moments when consumers are making decisions, and when a brand has a legitimate reason to be useful.

Real time asks marketers to keep pace with the moment. Right time asks them to understand the moment well enough to know when and how to participate. The most effective sports marketing playbooks will increasingly need to do both.

As another fall sports season gets underway, marketers should look beyond the biggest moments on the calendar without losing sight of their power. The “winning” opportunity increasingly lies in connecting those moments with everything happening around them.

As another fall sports
