This month, two new commercials for Aldi UK\u2019s holiday season have been released by ad agency McCann UK. Both went live on YouTube five days apart from one another. They\u2019re also blockbusters in their own right, debuting in 40 second and one-minute lengths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kevin becomes an action hero in the first, and pays tribute to Coca-Cola. He\u2019s adventurous, and a bit Tim Burton-esque, in the second spot as he squares off against a wicked parsnip. Let\u2019s take a closer look at what\u2019s going on in both commercials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-a-christmas-cliff-hanger\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cA Christmas Cliff Hanger\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/kevin_the_carrot_aldi_uk.jpg\" alt=\"kevin_the_carrot_aldi_uk\" class=\"wp-image-9750\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.7777777777777777;width:608px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Can you #SaveKevin? The first advert kicks off with a cheeky nod to Coca-Cola\u2019s classic <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/F9_Vz_xVjAU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cAlways Coca-Cola\u201d commercials<\/a>. Kevin is the driver of an enormous truck. Tying in with the original Coca-Cola ads, the vehicle is red, lit up with lights, and speeding through a snowy landscape. Kevin even has his likeness painted on the truck\u2019s back, borrowing a (loose) page from <a href=\"http:\/\/360.advertisingweek.com\/meet-haddon-sundblom-creator-coca-colas-santa-claus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Haddon Sundblom\u2019s Santa Claus<\/a> illustrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/youtu.be\/GRfcLyLbgUo\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kevin\u2019s legs can\u2019t touch the pedals. I\u2019m pretty sure his arms aren\u2019t long enough to go around a steering wheel, either. Somehow, Kevin makes the drive work \u2014 perhaps with a bit of Christmas magic. Or, maybe it\u2019s that charming jingle in the background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/kevin_the_carrot_aldi_uk_cliffhanger.png\" alt=\"kevin_the_carrot_aldi_uk_cliffhanger\" class=\"wp-image-9749\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.7949260042283297;width:849px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suddenly, an unexpected snowfall causes Kevin\u2019s truck to skid off the road. Caught in the balance, the carrot hangs on to the wheel as everything slows to a pause. The truck dangles off the edge of a cliff, along with Kevin. Any movements and the whole rig could topple into the winter abyss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s only thing Kevin can do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHelp,\u201d he meekly mumbles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aldi UK uses this fade to black moment to encourage fans to follow the #SaveKevin hashtag. They\u2019ll be able to find out where Kevin\u2019s fate takes him next. Coca-Cola\u2019s Great Britain Twitter account has also tweeted to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CocaCola_GB\/status\/1058459614067523584\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">help Kevin the Carrot<\/a> with towing services, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-kevin-the-carrot-and-the-wicked-parsnip\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Kevin the Carrot and the Wicked Parsnip<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kevin must have taken Coca-Cola up on their offer out of his jam. The next advert takes us to a dark Christmas night narrated by actor Jim Broadbent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/pascal_kevin_the_carrot_aldi_uk.png\" alt=\"pascal_kevin_the_carrot_aldi_uk\" class=\"wp-image-9752\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.7966101694915255;width:636px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We meet Pascal, described as a \u201crotten old parsnip.\u201d He resides in a vast castle and is described as \u201cthe root of all evil\u201d with a hatred for carrots. Anyone frightened about the drastic change in the commercial\u2019s tone needs only to listen to the background music. It\u2019s Danny Elfman\u2019s score from <em>Edward Scissorhands<\/em>, lending a much-needed melancholy feeling to the ad. We do worry for Kevin the Carrot\u2019s family, locked up by Pascal in a small cage. However, there\u2019s less of a likelihood that they will be snipped to pieces because Kevin the Carrot will save the day in the next 60 seconds. Erm, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/youtu.be\/hv54YNpz0Ig\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kevin isn\u2019t about to let himself, or his fellow veggies, roast. He sprints, dodges, and leaps to new heights to defeat Pascal. Kevin and his family even have a ride waiting for them outside \u2014 it\u2019s Santa!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I suppose Christmas magic <em>is<\/em> real, after all. That, or Coca-Cola sent over an additional sleigh from the team. They probably knew a carrot wandering around in a castle is in over his root, I mean, head.
