He was starring in \u201cScared Silly,\u201d a terrifying tale where he encountered a mysterious Count living in Transylvania\u2026 and that\u2019s no joke!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/mcdonaldland_scared_silly.jpg\" alt=\"mcdonaldland_scared_silly\" class=\"wp-image-9723\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.7916666666666666;width:760px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We might have exaggerated a few of those details ever so slightly. Yes, the year was still 1986 and Ronald McDonald was the star of the story. Advertising agency Leo Burnett was working on a new Halloween-themed spot for McDonald\u2019s starring Ronald and the <a href=\"http:\/\/360.advertisingweek.com\/finding-mcdonaldland-meet-ronald-mcdonalds-friends-pt-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">McNugget Buddies<\/a> from McDonaldland. The new commercial needed to scare audiences silly \u2014 and nobody knew how to add more \u201csilly\u201d to McDonaldland quite like Rich Seidelman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/youtu.be\/kPd7MtTVbIw\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For more than two decades, Rich Seidelman worked on ad campaigns for McDonald\u2019s and the McDonaldland characters. He was an art director at Leo Burnett in 1986 when this spot was shot. Writer Barbara Fallon worked alongside him to create it. Seidelman gave me a peek into the commercial\u2019s ghoulish creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/mcdonaldland_scared_silly_2.jpg\" alt=\"mcdonaldland_scared_silly_2\" class=\"wp-image-9724\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.678125;width:651px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-count-mcnuggula\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Count McNuggula<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inspired by Count Dracula, Count McNuggula has the ability to shape-shift from a bat into one of the McNugget Buddies! He\u2019s full of puns and wants to know what Ronald is doing in his \u201cneck of the woods.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe McNugget puppets and sets were created by my friends Tony Urbano, Tim Blaney, and their band of wacky puppeteers.\u201d Seidelman recalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/mcdonaldland_scared_silly_3.jpg\" alt=\"mcdonaldland_scared_silly_3\" class=\"wp-image-9725\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.4860681114551084;width:960px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here we have Ronald meeting the Count for the first time. Looming ominously in the background shadows is the Nuggetvania Castle. Count McNuggula offers Ronald an invitation to his home and to see what they\u2019re making inside. Should Ronald accept the offer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/mcdonaldland_scared_silly_4.jpg\" alt=\"mcdonaldland_scared_silly_4\" class=\"wp-image-9726\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.8;width:768px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-nuggetvania-castle\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Nuggetvania Castle<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course he does \u2014 the Count\u2019s puns are too good to resist! Inside the Nuggetvania Castle, Ronald quickly encounters The Mad ScienNugget. With a tuff of white hair and a lab coat, The Mad ScienNugget is busy cooking up secret sauces with the rest of the McNugget Buddies including FrankenNugget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/mcdonaldland_scared_silly_5.jpg\" alt=\"mcdonaldland_scared_silly_5\" class=\"wp-image-9722\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.2648221343873518;width:960px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-laboratory\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Laboratory<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The laboratory\u2019s control panel is the perfect place for McNugget Buddies to cook secret dipping sauces! All you need to do is pull the lever \u201con\u201d when you\u2019re ready to create. Hopefully, the sauce simmers as planned and there aren\u2019t any accidents. If there are, Ronald is here to save the day with McDonald\u2019s sauces!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Urbano, Blaney, and their puppeteer team put the set together, but where has the electronic lab gone? Seidelman says that Linda Magruder Zufall, a former supervisor at Leo Burnett, has put the lab into storage at the McDonald\u2019s Production Studio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/youtu.be\/QZdH9KUkd54\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-scared-silly-returns\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Scared Silly Returns!<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cScared Silly\u201d would later be revised in 1991 with the original cast of characters, including Count McNuggula and Ronald McDonald, returning to Nuggetvania Castle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are even more chills, thrills, and dips in the sequel, and all the puns you could ever ask for out of the McDonaldland gang.
