The official launch for the mascots was slated for Summer 2018 and the <a href=\"https:\/\/tokyo2020.org\/en\/special\/mascot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">names of the characters<\/a> have finally been revealed as\u2026 Miraitowa and Someity!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/popicon.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/tokyo_2020_mascots.png\" alt=\"tokyo_2020_mascots\" class=\"wp-image-9277\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.626890756302521;width:968px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who\u2019s who? Miraitowa (pronounced as \u201cmiray-towa\u201d) is the Olympic mascot in blue. The name of this character combines the Japanese words \u201cmirai\u201d and \u201ctowa\u201d which translate to \u201cfuture\u201d and \u201ceternity\u201d in English. It\u2019s fitting for an icon that is meant to embody old traditions and new innovations at the Games. Miraitowa\u2019s old traditions are in the character\u2019s natural charm while the innovations are found in its cutting edge aesthetic. Miraitowa is highly athletic, with the ability to move anywhere in an instant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The name for Someity, pronounced as \u201csoh-may-tee,\u201d has a neat tie-in with its pink coloring. As the official Paralympic mascot, Someity\u2019s name comes from the Japanese cherry blossom, \u201csomeiyoshino.\u201d It\u2019s also a play on the phrase \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2018\/07\/22\/national\/tokyo-games-organizers-introduce-mascots-miraitowa-someity-world\/#.W1VINthKj3A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">so mighty<\/a>,\u201d according to organizers of the Tokyo Games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someity is known for having the ability to stay calm, collected, and easily converse with natural elements like the stones and wind. This mascot loves nature and possesses telekinetic powers, being able to move things simply by looking at them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In spite of their very different personalities, Miraitowa and Someity are good friends \u2014 and very enthusiastic about the Olympic Games.
