Loyal fans of the sporting event may recall that the candidate for Russia\u2019s mascot \u2014 then known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifa.com\/worldcup\/videos\/meet-wolf-official-mascot-candidate-2836285\">\u201cWolf\u201d<\/a> \u2014 was introduced in 2016. Since his initial debut, more than one million Russians cast their votes during the month-long voting period to pick his name. Wolf was renamed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifa.com\/worldcup\/organisation\/mascot\/\">\u201cZabivaka\u201d<\/a> after one of the most engaging creative processes for a mascot in FIFA World Cup history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Meet Wolf \u2013 Official Mascot candidate\" width=\"1240\" height=\"698\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NTCD5OusVKY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zabivaka\u2019s name means \u201cthe one who scores\u201d in Russia. He is considered to be the youngest player on the football squad (also known as soccer, for all of our readers based in the United States), but age is just a number to him. He\u2019s fast, bold, and knows the game inside and out. As a mascot, he\u2019s confident and always ready to play and have some fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/360.advertisingweek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/manezhnaya_square_moscow.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8250\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.3445378151260505;width:960px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the official mascot for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, Zabivaka plays an important role in the games. The character is considered an ambassador on behalf of Russia and helps promote the event and entertain crowds at stadiums.
