SEO was never simple, but the basic feedback loop was clear.

AI is breaking that loop. Increasingly, consumers aren’t being presented with a neat list of blue links to browse. AI systems can now search on their behalf, synthesising information, comparing options and making recommendations, often before a consumer reaches a brand’s website and sometimes without visiting at all. In this ‘Answer Era’, the challenge is no longer simply to be found, but to be understood, trusted and ultimately recommended.

That has prompted a rush to measure ‘AI visibility’: whether a brand appears in an answer, how often it is cited and how it is described. Those signals matter. But they can also create a false sense of certainty.

A brand can be mentioned without being recommended. It can be cited without shaping the conclusion. Its information can influence an answer even when the brand itself is barely visible. And an AI answer can affect a purchase without generating the click that would once have made that influence measurable.

That is the blind spot in action: it is not simply the gap between brands and AI visibility. It is the gap between visibility and actual influence: what information an AI system found, what it used, what it recommended and whether any of that changed what the consumer did next.

Influence is hard to establish

For measurement purposes, these signals need to be separated. A mention means the brand’s name appeared. A citation means a source was linked or attributed. A recommendation means the brand was presented as a suitable choice for a particular need.

Influence is harder to establish: information may have contributed to the substance, framing or ordering of an answer even when the source itself is not prominent or cited. An outcome is what happens next: a follow-up question, a shortlist, a site visit, an enquiry or a purchase.

None of this makes content quality less important. Brands still need clear, consistent and accessible information about their products and services. Specifications, compatibility, pricing, availability, limitations and use cases should not be scattered across contradictory pages, PDFs and feeds.

Independent corroboration matters too. AI systems can draw on retailers, publishers, experts, reviews and other sources, not simply what a brand says about itself. The more consequential the claim, the more important credible supporting evidence becomes.

But this is now basic hygiene, not a differentiated AI strategy. Producing more content, planting more mentions or rewriting pages around endless prompt variations will not close the blind spot. The more important question is whether decision-useful information is being found and used, and which changes actually improve that.

This is why improving the underlying information matters more than trying to anticipate every possible prompt. When product facts, claims and limitations are accurate and consistent across owned and third-party sources, AI systems have fewer contradictions to resolve as a conversation develops.

The missing measurement layer

Rankings, prompt monitoring, share of voice and sentiment can show whether a brand is present and how it is portrayed. They are useful, but they are snapshots of outputs, not a complete account of how an answer was constructed or what happened afterwards.

A dashboard might show that a brand was cited across a set of prompts. It cannot necessarily show whether the system retrieved other brand content and discarded it, whether the citation influenced the recommendation, or whether the consumer acted on the answer. Results also vary by model, prompt, location, session and time, so observed visibility should not be mistaken for a stable market position.

More fundamentally, these systems behave less like answer engines and more like conversation engines. Each follow-up adds context and changes the path, so the number of possible journeys expands with every turn. Prompt tracking can test representative questions, but it cannot predict every conversation. Its value is in revealing patterns, not reproducing the customer journey in full.

Traditional web analytics start too late. They see the consumer once a click has happened. AI visibility tools often stop too early. They see the answer, but not the journey from source material to answer to decision. The missing measurement layer sits between the two.

Telemetry traces the journey

This is where telemetry can help. AI is creating a new attribution problem because it inserts an increasingly influential – but poorly observable – layer into the customer journey. Traditional analytics can tell marketers a great deal about what happens after a click, but much less about what happened inside the AI-mediated journey before it.

Better attribution starts with better observability. Telemetry can provide records of observable signals at different points in that journey: when an AI system retrieves or accesses a resource; when a source is cited or surfaced in an answer, where platforms expose that information; and when a user subsequently engages through an observable interaction.

Those signals do not reveal everything that happens inside an AI system. Retrieval does not prove that information influenced an answer. A citation does not prove endorsement. And an engagement or referral does not prove that the AI interaction caused a subsequent purchase. Some relationships will still need to be inferred or modelled.

But that is also true of attribution more broadly. The opportunity is to rebuild the measurement chain that AI has disrupted, replacing some of what marketers currently infer with observable events that can be connected to downstream customer and commercial signals.

As more of those events become measurable, marketers can move beyond simply asking whether a brand appeared in an AI answer. They can begin to understand how information moved through the AI ecosystem, where it may have contributed to the customer journey and, ultimately, how that influence might be attributed.

Build a measurement ladder

Brands need a measurement model that progresses from presence to consequence. At the first level is visibility: was the brand present, and was it portrayed accurately? Next comes observability: can we see whether relevant information was retrieved, cited, displayed or engaged with? Then comes recommendation: did the answer place the brand in the consideration set for a particular need? Beyond that is influence: what role did that information or recommendation play in shaping the consumer’s decision? Finally comes attribution: how much credit should that influence receive for the eventual outcome?

Each step requires different evidence. Prompt monitoring can assess presence and portrayal. Telemetry can make parts of the AI-mediated journey observable. Output analysis can identify citations and recommendations. Experiments, referral data and downstream customer signals can then help marketers understand influence and build better attribution models.

The important thing is not to collapse these signals into a single measure of ‘AI visibility’. A mention is not a recommendation. A citation is not proof of influence. And influence is not the same as attribution.

Audit the blind spot, not just the answers

Most GEO audits focus on fixed prompts, citations and share of voice, but these only capture a small sample of possible AI conversations. A stronger audit looks beneath the answers: can AI access the right information, is it accurate and consistent, and can retrieval, citation and engagement actually be measured?

This gives brands a clearer picture of how AI-ready they really are, while identifying where information gaps or poor measurement could be holding them back. The goal isn’t simply to improve an AI visibility score, but to understand what information is shaping the customer journey and what influence can reasonably be attributed to it.

<p
