This doesn’t come as a huge surprise – people have been listening to books and longer form articles for years. Reddit has also been building out its ad infrastructure with more automation, more ways for advertisers to target and report on campaigns, and I’d be surprised if that groundwork doesn’t end up underpinning whatever it builds next – video included.

Read quickly, that video test looks like Reddit copying a format that’s been thriving elsewhere for years. TikTok and YouTube have been full of creators reading out Reddit posts over B-roll for ages now; an entire genre built on repackaging text Reddit never got a penny for. But I don’t think they’re copying anyone here, and the reason why tells you a lot more about how brands should actually treat Reddit than the test itself.

Why the video test is the opposite of catch-up

Start with the economics, because that’s really what this comes down to. Video ad inventory has always commanded a premium over static text and image formats, and Reddit’s worked out how to convert twenty years of archived text into exactly that format, without a single creator having to upload anything new.

That only works at this scale because of what Reddit’s actually sitting on. Ofcom reported Reddit had already overtaken TikTok as the UK’s fourth most-visited platform, and I’d guess that’s at least partly down to Google changing its search algorithm to favour discussion-forum content. Whatever the reason, and however much that ranking might move around, this isn’t a smaller platform copying a bigger one to survive. It’s a platform cashing in on a twenty-year archive that none of its newer rivals can get anywhere near.

Reddit isn’t the only one cashing in on it. Google has had a multi-year licensing deal with Reddit since 2024, reportedly worth around $60 million a year, giving it access to that content to train and ground its AI systems. Reddit turning the same archive into video is basically the same play, except this time it doesn’t have to sell access to anyone, and it keeps all the upside.

There are signs Reddit is starting to value that archive more carefully. With search referrals turning ‘choppy’ this summer, by its own admission, it’s reportedly been weighing whether to renew the Google deal at all, and it’s shutting off RSS feeds in November and its public API by March 2027. It’s taking much tighter control of its archive, and video looks like one more way of making it pay.

Here’s the bit I think actually matters for brands. Every real post you make on Reddit today is quietly becoming part of that same archive. Show up properly now and you’ve got a history to draw on when the next product launches. Turn up late, and you haven’t.

The test

Oatly’s one I’ve watched build exactly that kind of history, and it’s still one of the best examples going. It turned a commodity – oat milk – into something that actually felt like it belonged on Reddit, largely by matching the platform’s tone instead of fighting it.

The copy was self-deprecating, openly anti-advertising, and it cut straight through the usual ad-blindness. Staff answered nutrition and sustainability questions directly in vegan subreddits, no hard sell in sight. When people criticised the brand, it turned up in the thread instead of ducking it. Meme-worthy packaging got people posting about it for free, thousands of times over, and even the paid activity was targeted tightly enough that it read like part of the conversation rather than an ad dropped into it.

That’s the kind of native presence that actually compounds. Not one post that goes viral once, a pattern a subreddit comes to recognise over months. So here’s the test I’d apply to anything you post on there: would it survive being read by the actual subreddit it went out in, without you quietly deleting it afterwards. Passing it looks unglamorous. Answering real questions before anyone’s checking whether it worked. Showing up for months, not timing a burst of activity around a launch.

Why reacting isn’t a plan

Consumer research highlights 93% of people say authentic brand engagement is what builds their trust in a brand on Reditt, and 85% said they’d pay more for a brand they see as genuinely authentic. That kind of trust doesn’t get built in a few weeks, and it doesn’t disappear that fast either. It’s the product of showing up consistently, not reacting to whatever the platform happens to be doing that particular week.

The plan, and the window on video

Search changes by the minute these days, citations are up one month, down the next. Chase the loudest headline and you’re rebuilding from scratch by the time the next one lands. What actually holds up is a standing way of showing up, not a plan built to respond to search.

Same goes for video. Windows like this one don’t stay open for long, and once Reddit builds a proper way to sell against it, I’d put money on the brands already active in the threads getting first access, not the ones scrambling to file a media plan after launch.

Which brings us right back to the test I’d actually ask you to sit with. Would your last Reddit post have survived being read in the subreddit it went out in? If the answer’s yes, you’re already in a decent position for whatever Reddit builds next. If it’s no, that’s the bit worth fixing, not the headline.

Reddit’s had an
