That is usually the wrong place to start. A campaign can be grammatically perfect and still feel completely foreign to the people it is trying to reach.

The bigger mistake is assuming that America is a single, culturally uniform market. It is not. The US is a collection of regions, communities, subcultures and consumer expectations, connected by a common language but divided by context. Brands entering from Asia often discover this only after they have already spent on media.

Localization is not translation

Translation asks whether the words are accurate. Localization asks whether the idea makes sense here. Those are very different tests.

A value proposition that works in Singapore or Japan may depend on trust signals, product explanations or cultural assumptions that do not travel with it. American consumers may expect a clearer point of view, faster proof of value, more explicit differentiation or a different balance between aspiration and practicality. The underlying product can remain identical while the way it earns attention and trust needs to change.

That means localization has to reach beyond copy. It touches positioning, creative direction, channel strategy, creator selection, landing pages, social proof and even the way an offer is structured. The question is not, ‘How do we say this in American English?’ It is, ‘Why should this audience care?’

The US is not one audience

The second trap is treating a national media plan as a national consumer strategy. A brand can technically target the entire country from day one. That does not mean it should.

New York, Los Angeles, Austin and Seattle may share platforms, but they do not necessarily share the same cultural cues, competitive context or purchase motivations. Even within one city, the audience can fragment dramatically by community, life stage and identity.

For an incoming brand, the more useful approach is often to identify a beachhead: the audience and geography where the proposition has the strongest reason to win. Learn there first. Which messages generate response? Which objections keep appearing? Which creators make the brand feel native rather than imported? Those signals are more useful than simply buying broader reach.

Imported proof does not always travel

Brands naturally arrive with evidence from home: awards, customer numbers, retailer relationships, celebrity partnerships and press coverage. But proof is contextual. A household name in one country may mean nothing in another.

This is where many market-entry campaigns quietly lose efficiency. The creative assumes familiarity that does not exist. The landing page leans on credentials the new customer cannot decode. The brand then compensates with more media spend when the real problem is a trust gap.

Before scaling, marketers should audit every proof point through the eyes of someone encountering the brand for the first time. If an accolade needs three sentences of explanation, it may not be the strongest lead. Local reviews, recognizable partners, relevant experts, creators or concrete product evidence may carry more weight.

Build a feedback loop before you build a playbook

Global brands often want a US playbook before they have accumulated US learning. That reverses the order.

The first months in a new market should be treated as structured learning. Run focused creative tests. Listen to comments and sales conversations. Compare what people click with what they ultimately buy. Track the language customers use to describe the problem, not just the language the brand uses to describe the product.

Then feed those observations back into positioning and creative. Localization should be a loop, not a launch task that gets checked off once.

The advantage global brands already have

None of this means an international brand should erase where it comes from. In fact, origin can be one of its strongest assets. Japanese craftsmanship, Singaporean innovation or a distinctive Asian cultural perspective can create differentiation in a crowded US category.

The goal is not to make a foreign brand look American. It is to make the brand understandable, relevant and credible to the Americans it wants to reach.

That distinction matters. The brands that travel well do not simply translate themselves. They preserve what makes them distinctive while rebuilding the context around it. In an era when almost any company can buy global distribution and global media, that ability to translate meaning – not merely language – is becoming one of the most important skills in international marketing.

About the Author:

Geraldine Pang is Founder & Managing Director of Creative For More, a cross-border marketing agency working across Singapore, Tokyo and New York.
