Indeed, Dr. Archana Manapragada Tedone, a researcher at the University of Baltimore, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8782676\/#:~:text=In%20addition%2C%20the%20act%20of,to%20WFC%20via%20psychological%20detachment.\">found<\/a> that answering work-related emails during off hours has \u201cnegative implications for work\/family balance and wellbeing for both in-office workers and those required to WFH<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>[work from home]<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">.\u201d For this reason, more than 12 countries have passed laws enforcing employees\u2019 \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/08\/26\/nx-s1-5089792\/australia-right-to-disconnect-workers-respond-after-work\">right to disconnect<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cutting-edge HR strategies can help ensure employees can care for their personal lives while bringing their best selves to your business. Here are my top tips for business leaders and professionals who want to effectively and properly leverage connectivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Understanding the value of healthy boundaries<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Dr. Tedone, employees should avoid responding to work-related emails during non-work hours to preserve their energy, morale, and well-being. For those who cannot avoid doing this, she recommends designating a specific time window during off hours for answering work-related emails rather than trying to respond to new messages as they stream in. Failing to do this can generate a feeling of always being \u201con,\u201d which is draining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Buy-in from management and leadership is necessary to support employees who create boundaries of this nature. Without it, employees who attempt to preserve their resources through boundary setting could feel pressured to adopt their coworkers\u2019 unhealthy practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the best way leaders and managers can signal their support for healthy boundaries is by utilizing them themselves. Employees often look to those in authority to set the standard, so when someone in the C-Suite models how to set clear boundaries, it speaks volumes. As <a href=\"https:\/\/professional.dce.harvard.edu\/blog\/why-workplace-culture-matters\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CCorporate%20culture%20starts%20at%20the,%2C%20they%20will%20follow%20suit.%E2%80%9D\">Harvard instructor Michael McCarthy<\/a> explains, \u201cCorporate culture starts at the top. When people throughout the organization see senior leadership living the values, they will follow suit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creating a healthy corporate culture<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, recognizing and supporting employees\u2019 boundaries is just the beginning. Savvy business leaders must also foster a corporate culture in which employees feel comfortable communicating their needs in general. This means creating feelings of belonging and psychological safety in the workplace so that employees feel safe opening up and expressing what they truly think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nurturing this kind of environment doesn\u2019t just benefit employees \u2014 it also buoys the entire organization. <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2023\/02\/what-is-psychological-safety#:~:text=Let's%20start%20with%20a%20definition,without%20fear%20of%20negative%20consequences.\">Harvard Business Review<\/a> has associated corporate cultures characterized by psychological safety with improved teamwork and creativity, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/content\/blogs\/gb\/en\/2019\/08\/how-engaged-employees-are-the-path-to-success.html\">Salesforce survey<\/a> has shown that employees report feeling 4.6 times more likely to perform at their best if their voices have been heard in the workplace. Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/people-and-organizational-performance\/our-insights\/what-employees-are-saying-about-the-future-of-remote-work\">McKinsey &#038; Company<\/a> has found that when workers are included in workplace discussions, their productivity is five times more likely to increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trust and empower employees<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When employees have control over how they do their work, their job satisfaction goes up. Indeed, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10295641\/\">2023 study<\/a> also suggests they can even develop a passion for their position. Under these conditions, \u201ca job is no longer only regarded as a way to obtain financial rewards, but also as an approach to realize one\u2019s self-worth, express one\u2019s own assertion, and enhance one\u2019s well-being,\u201d the study\u2019s authors write. Workers\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/topics\/healthy-workplaces\/work-life-harmony\">work-family balance also improves<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s why managers and business leaders should empower employees and give them autonomy in the workplace. This means trusting employees to shape their roles in the ways that work best for them, completing their tasks according to their own methods, and determining their own priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again, this approach benefits the whole organization, not just the employees themselves. Research correlates employees\u2019 autonomy on the job not only with a healthier work-family balance but also with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7243795\/#:~:text=This%20is%20due%20in%20part%20to%20improved,they%20were%20productive%20(Amabile%20and%20Kramer%2C%202011).\">heightened productivity<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/0972150915591435?icid=int.sj-abstract.citing-articles.262\">creativity<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2021\/10\/forget-flexibility-your-employees-want-autonomy\">retention<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Offer schedule flexibility<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Healthy boundaries, psychologically safe work environments, and autonomy go hand-in-hand with another important tool in the effective HR kit: offering flexible work options like remote work or personalized hours. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.randstadusa.com\/landing\/workmonitor-2023\/\">Randstad survey<\/a>, 83 percent of American workers consider flexible schedules to be important, and 74 percent say the same about flexibility of location. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/people-and-organizational-performance\/our-insights\/the-organization-blog\/three-types-of-modern-flexibility-todays-workers-demand\">McKinsey &#038; Company<\/a> found that not having flexible work arrangements was the number one reason 44 percent of workers quit their jobs and got a different one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet again, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/carolinecastrillon\/2022\/03\/23\/why-flexible-work-boosts-employee-productivity\/\">evidence suggests<\/a> that affording employees flexibility pays off for their employers. Part of the reason is that since employees can choose to work when and where they are most productive, the business naturally achieves higher productivity. Another reason is that when employees don\u2019t have to commute, they can use that time in ways that facilitate their optimal work-family balance. Flexibility has also been associated with improved employee engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Boosting your business<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We may live in an always-connected world, but that doesn\u2019t mean employees should always be reachable.
